Susan Sarandon, Kate Winslet, Mia Wasikowska and more join Roger Michell’s Blackbird

Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon (Dead Man WalkingThelma & Louise) will join Academy Award winner Kate Winslet (The Reader, Steve Jobs, Titanic), Mia Wasikowska (Crimson PeakAlice Through The Looking Glass, Jane Eyre) inRoger Michell’BLACKBIRD. Other cast to be announced are Sam Neill (Hunt for the WilderpeopleJurassic Park), Rainn Wilson (The OfficeThe Meg, Star Trek) and Bex Taylor-Klaus (13 Reasons, Hellfest), Lindsay Duncan (BirdmanLe Week-End) and newcomer Anson Boon (The Alienist and Crawl).

Sherryl Clark (Busted Shark) is producing with Millennium’s David Bernardi. Millennium’s Avi Lerner, Trevor Short, Boaz Davidson, Jeffrey Greenstein and Jonathan Yunger are executive producers. The film is co-produced by Alice Dawson.

Worldwide sales will be through Millennium.

Blackbird is an English-language remake of Bille August’s 2014 Danish-language film Silent Heart, penned by the original movie’s screenwriter Christian TorpeOne family spanning three generations come together over a weekend to be with their terminally ill mother before she takes her own life. Her family willingly supports her decision to help her die with dignity, but her daughters begin to unravel a secret that could disrupt her wish to die peacefully and on her own terms. 

Born in South Africa and now resident in London, director and producer Roger Michell is known for Titanic Town (1998), the smash-hit Notting Hill (1999), Changing Lanes (2002), The Mother (2003), Venus (2006) which featured an Academy Award-nominated lead performance from Peter O’Toole, Le Week-End (2013) and My Cousin Rachel (2017).

Millennium Films is one of the longest-running independent film companies in the history of Hollywood, with 20 years and more than 300 movies to its credit. The company now produces, finances and handles international sales for 5-8 star-driven movies per year, generally with budgets between $20 million and $80 million. It is best known for “The Expendables” series (more than half a billion dollars in worldwide box office) and the recent hits Olympus Has Fallen and London Has Fallen.

Blackbird will have a brilliant crew including director of photography Mike Eley (The Selfish GiantGrey Gardens), production designer J P Kelly (Stan & OllieThe Theory of Everything), costume design by BAFTA Award winner Dinah Collin (The Bourne SupremacyPride and Prejudice), make-up and hair by BAFTA Award winner Ivana Primorac (The Darkest HourThe Crown), the film will be edited by Kristina Hetherington (Red Joan, My Cousin Rachel) and the post supervisor is Louise Seymour (The Death of Stalin, Mindhorn).
