The Star Wars Kenobi spin-off movie may be filming in Belfast

We have got Solo: A Star Wars Story heading our way in May. It seems the news Star Wars Story may also be gathering speed.

The Belfast Telegraph is reporting that a new stand-alone film centring on the life of Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi – with Ewan McGregor reprising the role – will begin production there. There has not yet been an official announcement for the film or about McGregor returning to the role. I hope he does return.

Staff at the city’s Paint Hall studios in the Titanic Quarter have been told that once production on the final series of Game Of Thrones finishes later this year, production will begin on the Kenobi movie.

However, they do say that Star Wars creator George Lucas was in Belfast before Christmas checking out locations. As Disney now own Star Wars it seems doubtful George would have been there for that. Lucas spent part of his time there last November being given a guided tour of the Paint Hall studios. Paint Hall sources said Lucas was hugely impressed by the Belfast studio.

He could have been there for a number of reasons, but it seems some people at Paint Hall Studios do believe it is for a Kenobi movie.

“We’ve been told there will be work throughout 2019 because Star Wars is coming to Belfast,” said an insider.

“It was all very low key, only a few people knew that the old guy walking round the set was George Lucas. It was only when we were told about Star Wars coming here next year that it dawned on us that was why he was here before Christmas.”

They also say the film will be directed by Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Reader, The Crown).

I hope it is true as I really would like to see Ewan McGregor play Obi-Wan Kenobi again.
