Linda Hamilton will be back for the new Terminator film

James Cameron is looking to bring us a new Terminator trilogy. He is in negotiations to oversee a new “three-film arc” if the ongoing issues with the rights to the franchise can be resolved and had this to say about it, “The question is — has the franchise run its course or can it be freshened up. Can it still have relevance now where so much of our world is catching up to what was science fiction in the first two films. We live in a world of predator drones and surveillance and big data and emergent AI (artificial intelligence). So I am in discussions with David Ellison, who is the current rights holder globally for the Terminator franchise and the rights in the US market revert to me under US copyright law in a year and a half so he and I are talking about what we can do. Right now we are leaning toward doing a three-film arc and reinventing it. We’ll put more meat on the bones if we get past the next couple of hurdles as and when we announce that.”

Tim Miller (Deadpool) is going to direct the new film. Arnold Schwarzenegger has already said he will return and it seems that Linda Hamilton will be back to play Sarah Connor.

Cameron made the announcement at a private event saying, “As meaningful as she was to gender and action stars everywhere back then, it’s going to make a huge statement to have that seasoned warrior that she’s become return. There are 50-year-old, 60-year-old guys out there killing bad guys,” he said, referring to ageing male actors still anchoring movies, “but there isn’t an example of that for women.”

Cameron is producing along with Skydance. And the new film, which will be distributed by Paramount with Fox handling it internationally, is based on a story crafted by Cameron. Cameron and Miller created a writers room to work on what is planned to be a trilogy that can stand as single movies or form an overarching story. David Goyer, (Blade, Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies), Charles Eglee ,(Dark Angel), Josh Friedman (The Sarah Connor Chronicles), and Justin Rhodes, a frequent Goyer collaborator, were part of that room.
