Mike Mignola says the new Hellboy movie will be close to a horror film and the B.P.R.D. will be in it

It was recently announced that Milla Jovovich was joining the new Hellboy movie.

David Harbour (Stranger Things) is playing Hellboy, in the film which is slated to begin production in September. Neil Marshall (The Descent, Game of Thrones) will direct.

The film’s working title is Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen and has a script by Andrew Cosby (Eureka), Christopher Golden, and Mike Mignola (the creator of Hellboy). Ian McShane (John Wick, American Gods) is playing Hellboy’s adoptive father, Professor Trevor Bruttenholm (pronounced Broom). John Hurtpreviously played the role in Guillermo del Toro’stwo films.

This is a reboot as it won’t follow on from the Guillermo del Toro movies. So far there has been no mention of what other characters will be in the film. I was assuming we would be seeing some of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (the B.P.R.D. or BPRD) cast of characters, but there had been no mention of that until now.

Mignola was talking to Newsarama about the film and had this to say the BPRD.

The B.P.R.D. figures into the movie. I don’t want to say who is and who isn’t in the movie. I think it’s fair to say, however, that the primary focus is Hellboy and not a B.P.R.D. team movie.

That makes me happy. I do love the adventures of the B.P.R.D. I imagine we will get Abe Sapien, but will Doug Jones return for that?

Which BPRD characters do you want to see in the new film?

It also seems that Mignola is not as heavily involved in the production of the new film as he was with the previous two.

I was super involved Guillermo del Toro’s movies way more than this one. In those, I worked in pre-production and I was on set a lot of the time. As time went on, he and I had a different idea on what should happen.”

This new movie, I don’t have much hands-on involvement. I’m not doing any concept art. I am doing consulting, but I think from day one in discussions about the look and feel of this new movie, the director seems to be very much closer to the tone of the vision I wanted it to be.

Where Hellboy II: The Golden Army was a light fantasy film, this will be very much darker – close to a horror film. I’ve met some people doing pre-production, and I visit the person doing the creature effects. I’m very happy with what I’ve seen so far: I give them my two cents, then get out of the way. But I’m very happy they’re asking my opinion and giving me opportunities to solve certain creative problems.

I am glad they are bringing more horror to it as some of the comics can be very creepy.

The film is due out in 2018.
