Universal Pictures‘ new adaptation of Scarface is set to star Diego Luna (Rogue One, Blood Father) in the lead.

“Boardwalk Empire” creator Terence Winter wrote the most recent draft and that has been polished by Joel Coen & Ethan Coen (No Country for Old Men, Fargo). Antoine Fuqua was going to direct it, but had to leave due to a scheduling conflict with the sequel to The Equalizer.

However, Variety are reporting that David Ayer (Suicide Squad, Fury, Bright) is in talks to direct the new film. It is not clear whether Luna will still star now there is a new director on board.

Brian De Palma and Al Pacino’s 1983 Scarface was itself a remake of the 1932 film (which was based on Armitage Trail’s 1929 novel of the same name) and that turned out okay, so lets ease back on the remake complaints.

The film will be a Bluegrass Films and Global Produce production, and will be produced by Marc Shmuger, Scott Stuber, and Dylan Clark. Marty Bregman, producer of the 1983 “Scarface” film, will also produce.

The Scarface remake release date will be Friday, August 10, 2018.
